who we are
tom bunting –
Tom Bunting has an award-winning background in commercial and institutional architecture. A founding Partner of Bunting Coady Architects, Tom has over thirty years of professional experience. His vision and focus helped Bunting Coady Architects to achieve international recognition for its work in the evolution of sustainable and energy efficient design.
Respected for his detailed understanding of master planning and modern design, Tom Bunting possesses an extensive knowledge of established and emerging design languages. Over the past 30 years he has helped to pioneer a new language of passive building design which focuses on how climatic response, energy consumption and material choices can be a primary form and architectural generator, in addition to the traditional influences of social and built form context. Through Tom’s direction and advocacy, Bunting Coady Architects succeeded in creating an ever evolving portfolio of projects from large scale multi-use institutional buildings to simple commercial facilities which demonstrate these principles. These include the Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Cloverdale Campus, Broadway Tech Centre, Discover Place-Burnaby, the Peace Arch Border Crossing, Surrey District Education Centre and the Vancouver General Hospital’s Energy Centre on 12th Avenue.
A graduate of the School of Architecture at the University of British Columbia, Tom has served on a number of design panels and advisory boards including, the Vancouver Urban Design Panel and Vancouver Development Permit Board. He is presently chairs of the Whistler Design Review Committee.
Recently Tom has co-founded studio B architects, a hands-on boutique design firm specializing in sustainable commercial, mixed use and institutional planning and architecture.
michelle fenton – AIBC
With experience in recreation, civic, institutional and commercial interiors sectors, Michelle’s particular interests lie in creating well-articulated public space through careful studies, stakeholder consultation and intuitive design. Regardless of scale, Michelle approaches each project by exploring how the design can impact and enhance the everyday rituals of the human experience.
Prior to starting studio B architects, Michelle cofounded Groundswell Architects with Paul McDonnell; a small design firm focused on work with not for profit organizations, places of worship and urban design research projects.
Some of Michelle’s past design experience include Poirier Aquatic Centre, Riley Park Olympic Curling Venue Master Planning, Port Moody Rec Centre as project architect at HCMA, BC Children’s & Women’s Hospital Renovations as project architect at IBI Group Architects, SFU UniverCity Cornerstone Development as an intern architect at Neale Stanizkis Doll Adams Architects. In addition to her design credits, Michelle‘s knowledge of building practices allows her to adapt quickly and appropriately to construction issues in a comprehensive way.
Michelle, obtained her Masters degree at the University of Waterloo and was recognized with the Outstanding Thesis Award in her graduating class for her thesis on urban renewal through ritual and collective memory.
paul mcDonnell – AIBC
Paul McDonnell, has worked as an architect and designer in Toronto, London England and Vancouver on complex and diverse public projects. His attention to detail and keen, active listening is vital to the understanding of our clients’ needs. Prior to starting studio B architects, Paul co-founded Groundswell Architects with Michelle.
As design lead, Paul’s design direction results in efficient, cleanly detailed buildings that respond appropriately to its site. Paul utilizes current 3D modelling techniques throughout the design process to articulate the design process, helping clients easily visualize the project at every step of the way.
With a Master’s in Architecture from the University of Waterloo, Paul continues to develop his knowledge of the fundamentals of architectural typology and its essential role in the design of successful architectural projects.
